Department of Biophysics

The definition of biophysics is the science dealing with how physics applies to the processes of biology. Biophysics centers on understanding biological function in terms of physical and chemical principles and it is based on the integration of diverse disciplines, including the physics, mathematis, and computing sciences. Biophysics attempts to understand the structure and dynamics of the cell and biomolecules. This aspect overlaps with the study of molecular biology and biochemistry. However there is a distinction and it essentially lies in the attitude and we hope to bring out the outlook of ‘physics’ in dealing with the subject. In contrast to the world of physics, biology deals with living organisms which are not only far more complicated than inanimate objects but are always evolving.

A mature physicist, acquainting himself for the first time with the problems of biology, is puzzled by the circumstance that there are no absolute phenomena in biology. This diversity presents a challenge, and biophysics deals with it by using information from other disciplines and introduce more complex physical explanations to them.

The field of biophysics seeks to discover the structure and energetic properties of molecules, and to relate these properties to biochemical and cellular functions. The lectures in this department deal with physics principles involved in the study of organ-systems. The basic physical features of cell activity, transport of substances across the cell membrane and propagation of nerve impluses have been discussed. It includes subjects such as; the physical nature of biomolecules and energy principles regulating dynamics of homeostasis of living cell.

In conclusion, biophysics aims to train students in quantitative approaches to biological problems, while also developing their perspective in choosing forefront biological problems.
