DEPARTMENT OF RADIOLOGY OF THE FACULTY OF MEDICINE OF NEU

Since July 2010, the Radiology Department of Faculty of Medicine located on campus, having a contemporary architectural design, has been in the service of patients with the most advanced medical imaging devices integrated with the systems of the latest and highest technology that entirely meet all the needs of today's medical requirements. With three lecturers, two specialist physicians, ten radiologic technologists, field specialist nurses, three medical secretaries and two patient consultants, the department provides highest level diagnostic imaging and Interventional radiology (IR) to diagnose and treat patients using the least invasive techniques currently available, in order to minimize the risks that the patients may be exposed to and improve the quality of treatment. .

1 GE Signa HDXT 1.5 Tesla Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) system, 1 (GE Discovery CT 750 HD)64-detector multi-slice Computed tomography system, 1 (GE Innova 3100)Vascular Angiography imaging system, 1(GE Senographe Essential) Digital Mammography unit, 2 (GE Definium 6000) Digital Radiography system, 1 Fluoroscopy (GE Precision), 1 Computed Radiography system (Kodak CR 360), 2 Mobile Radiography devices (GE TMX plus), 1 Bone Densitometer (GE Lunar DPX Pro), 1 four-dimensional ultrasound (U.S.) device out of a total of 4 pieces, (1 GE Logic 9, 1 GE Voluson 730, 2 GE Logic 6) and also 1 Picture Archiving and Communication System are currently in use at the Department of Radiology..

Magnetic Resonance Imagining is not only used for cross-sectional imaging of the whole body but also for advanced MR scanning like; Magnetic Resonance Angiography (MRA), Magnetic Resonance Cholangiopancreatography (MRCP), MR Urography, fetal MRI, functional MRI, diffusion and perfusion MRI, diffusion tensor and fiber tractography, MR Spectroskopy, dynamic breast MRI, iron pigment accumulation measurements (R2 *). At the department, radiologic examinations for patients under anesthesia of all ages can only be carried out under the supervision of a specialized anesthesiologist.

Computed Tomography (CT) is used to generate 3 dimensional and cross sectional images of the whole body and to carry out advanced application techniques of computed tomography like Dynamic CT Applications; CT angiography, coronary angiography and Cardiac CT. In addition, our CT system produces high definition images and enhances the visualization of smaller structures, for improved diagnostic confidence, by means of its spectral technology which exists in only a few CT systems in the world. Besides diagnostic imaging, for the diagnosis of tissue lesions, CT-guided Trucut or fine-needle aspiration biopsy applications are carried out to provide the pathologist with a core of undamaged tissue from the lesion.

Besides the ultrasound-based diagnostic imaging to visualize all subcutaneous organs and anatomic parts of the body, trans-vaginal and intra-operative ultrasound procedures are also performed with ultrasonography. Ultrasound-guided fine-needle aspiration or Trucut biopsies can be carried out as well. The vascular structure of the whole arterial and venous system and the blood flow can be analyzed with Color Doppler US. In addition, detailed and 4-dimensional fetal US (pregnancy scan) is performed.

Besides conventional digital radiographs with Digital Radiography and Fluoroscopic imaging devices, real-time imaging of excretory and gastrointestinal systems is also carried out with augmented radio-contrast agent at minimal radiation dose to ensure that patients receive only the amount of optimal dose that is necessary to produce a high quality image.

High Definition Digital Mammography System is used for breast cancer screening and diagnosis with a minimum radiation dose. In addition galactography (used for imaging the breast ducts), tissue marking for stereotactic breast biopsy the fine needle aspiration biopsy is also carried out successfully. Digital images obtained at the medical imaging center in an intranet media by PACS and RIS systems owned by our hospital and departments, are immediately transferred to clinical physicians' computers. The radiological images and reports of the patients can be stored electronically for years. These saved images and reports help the physicians to avoid the use of X rays again and minimize the amount of harmful doses that the patients are to be exposed. In this way, the patients are provided with a fast and safe healthcare service that that of regular health applications.
