Prof. Dr. Hüseyin GÖKÇEKUŞ

Prof. Dr. Hüseyin Gökçekuş was born on 23 December 1960 in Nicosia, Cyprus. He finished his elementary education at Gönyeli Elementary School, and then completed his secondary education at Bayraktar Secondary School before finally graduating from Lefkoşa Turkish High School. Following this, he graduated from the Department of Geological Engineering in the Faculty of Sciences at Ankara University in 1982. He commenced his M.Sc. studies at the Middle East Technical University (METU) under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Vedat Doyuran, and completed his studies after the submission of his M.Sc. thesis entitled “Hydrogeology of Western Konya Plain and Interpretation of Groundwater Level Fluctuation”. Prof. Dr. Gökçekuş, who started his academic career as a research assistant at Middle East Technical University in 1983, completed his Ph.D. studies in 1990, following the preparation of his thesis paper on “Hydrogeological and Hydrogeochemical Evaluation of the Güzelyurt Groundwater Basin-TRNC” again under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Vedat Doyuran.

Following the completion of his Ph.D. studies, he left METU, where he had conducted his studies and worked as a research assistant for 7 years, and returned to the TRNC in 1990 to carry out his two-year military service in Yeşilırmak. On completion of this in March 1992, he started working as a lecturer at the Near East University (NEU) and has been with NEU ever since.

He was given the rank of assistant professorship in 1992, and following that he became an associate professor in 1994 and obtained the degree of professorship in 2001. During his career at NEU, Prof. Dr. Gökçekuş has been assigned to various duties such as the Chairman of the Department of Civil Engineering, Managing Director of the Registrar’s Office, the Acting Rector, General Secretary, and many other official duties. He is currently the Chairman of the Department of Civil Engineering, Vice Rector, the Chairman of the Disciplinary Committee of the University, a Member of the Administrative Board of the Faculty of Engineering, a Member of Senate, and a Member of the Administrative Board of the University.

He has already published 80 articles that focus on water problems, the environment, earthquakes, tourism and education: most of them being in English, and has conducted the editorial position of many books. He has carried out over 120 presentations in various countries such as Turkey, the TRNC, Southern Cyprus, Sweden, France, Greece, the United States of America, Italy, Austria, Morocco, Azerbaijan, the United Kingdom, Norway, Kyrgyzstan, Indonesia, Russia and Brazil. Moreover, Prof. Dr. Gökçekuş, who has had over 50 interviews with both national and international press, has also had several articles published in both Turkish and English.

Prof. Dr. Gökçekuş has so far carried out the chairmanship of many national and international scientific symposiums and conferences, and has taken part in Academic Committees and Scientific and Organizational Advisory Boards. Along with several scientific studies which he has carried out over the last twenty years, he has contributed immensely to the recognition of Near East University and the TRNC by masterminding the arrangements, planning and development of several national and international conferences.

He has managed to deliver several of his studies to a wide number of populace via local and international press and media institutions. Prof. Dr. Gökçekuş, a number of whose studies have been cited and shown as a reference, has successfully represented the TRNC in several national and international scientific conferences where he submitted and presented his papers.

Prof. Dr. Gökçekuş is a member of several national and international scientific foundations and institutions. Lastly, he has been named as a member of the “International Council for Scientific Development (ICSD), International Academy of Science (IAS) – Health and Ecology”, and moreover, was nominated as the Vice President of the Board of Trustees and the Advisor of the Mediterranean Region of this institution between 2007 and 2010. He has once again been elected for the same position and will continue his duties as the Advisor of the Mediterranean Region in the new term.

He has twice obtained Cyprus-American Scholarship Program Short Term Training Grants given by the USA - Cyprus Fulbright Commission; one of them being on “Environmental Assessment of Abandoned Mine Sites” between the dates of 4 August to 10 September 1994, and the other being on “Integrated Water Resources Management” between the dates of 7 April and 10 May 2003. During these short-term courses, he carried out his studies with the most prestigious scientists at the most prestigious universities and institutions of the USA such as the University of Vermont Medicate Alumni Building, VT., California Politechnical University Pomona, Ca., Yale University, New Haven CT., and Brooklyn College, Brooklyn, N.Y. He has also carried out his studies at the centres of the United States Geological Survey Institution (USGS), which is one of the most important institutions of the USA, in various states of the USA (Headquarters, Washington D.C., National Centre, Reston, VA., U.S. Geological Survey water Resources, Division California District, Sacramento, CA., U.S. Geological Federal Centre, Denver, CO.). Furthermore, he has been engaged in studies with scientists and official staff of several scientific and environmental institutions in both California and Denver on various water and geological sources, and has carried out several observations in laboratories and terrain analysis.

Prof. Dr. Gökçekuş has attended several international workshops and courses, and has been awarded certificates of participation and contribution to those workshops and courses. Some of these being “IBM, PC Applications in Ground Water Pollution and Hydrology, in Boston, Massachusetts, from 14 to19 August 1994; “Joint Seismic Observation Period (JSOP) workshop” in Southern Cyprus from 15 to 17 May 1995; “Workshop on Seismic Hazard in the Mediterranean Region Earthquake Ground Shaking Maps and their Applications” from 3 to7 May 1999; “Miami-Dade Fire Rescue’s (MDFD) Training for Instructor (TFI)”, a workshop organized at the J.W. Fulbright Centre in the Buffer Zone in Nicosia, from 26 to 30 March 2001; “Integrated Water Resources Management” workshop given by the US Bureau of Reclamation of the Ministry of Interior, from 7 to 11 April 2003; “Water Management Issues” workshop given by the California State Polytechnic University, Pomona, from 14 to 29 April 2003; “Understanding the European Union” course given by the E.U. Information Centre in Nicosia from 2 to 4 June 2004; “A Study of the European Union” course from 9 to 11 June 2004; and a “Consensus in European Union” course from 16 to 18 June 2004.

Prof. Dr. Gökçekuş was awarded the “outstanding service award” by the Union of Turkish Engineers and Architects’ Chamber, Chamber of Geology Engineers and Union of Cyprus Turkish Engineers and Architects, and Chamber of Mine, Geology and Metallurgical Engineers for his “services and contributions on geological issues at national and international platforms” on 16 February 1988; he was also awarded a “Certificate for his 25th year in the profession” by the Union of Turkish Engineers and Architects’ Chamber in May 2007; with the “Golden Badge” being given by the Federation of Journalists of Mersin for his superior scientific achievements and contributions to science in June 2008; the Pavlov Honor Golden Medal of International Science Academy (Health and Ecology) was awarded by the International Scientific Developments Council for his superior performance and contributions to science, in accordance with Article 21 of the National Environmental Health Activity Plan of the World Health Organization in February 2007. He has in addition been given a certificate of appreciation by Prof. Dr. Veysel Eroğlu, the Minister of Environment and Forestry of Turkey, for his valuable contributions to the organization of the 5th World Water Forum which was carried out with 33,058 participants from 192 countries. Last but not least, he was awarded the “Near East University Scientific Research Award” on 3 March 2010 for his scientific publications published in 2009. Apart from these, he holds several other awards and certificates of appreciation given by various official and private foundations and institutions. In addition, he has been honoured by the Founding President of the TRNC his Excellency Rauf Raif Denktaş for his contributions to science that have also helped towards the recognition of the TRNC, his studies and the conferences he has organized: Water Problems in the Mediterranean Countries, 23 December 1997; Earthquake Hazard and Risk in the Mediterranean Region, 21 January 2000; The Cyprus Issue, Past, Present and the Vision for the Future, 27 June 2001; Environmental Problems of the Mediterranean Region, 18 June 2002; The Environment: Survival and Sustainability, 14 June 2007 also he was awarded a certificate for his outstanding performance and contribution by the second President his Excellency Mehmet Ali Talat on 12 August 2004. He was also awarded a certificate of appreciation by the President of the National Parliament Dr. Hasan Bozer for similar reasons on 11 March 2010.

He was elected for membership of the Higher Education Planning, Evaluation, Accreditation and Coordination Council (YÖDAK) on 25 October 2010 and appointed for 4 years as a council member on behalf of the National Parliament.

Prof. Dr. Hüseyin Gökçekuş is married to Dr. Hatice Gökçekuş, a specialist of physical treatment and rehabilitation, and has two children. He is currently carrying out his tasks at the Near East University and YÖDAK.
