Dr. Suat I. Günsel

Dr. Suat Günsel

Dr. Günsel was born in Beşiktepe Village of Paphos on 3 August 1952. His father was the forester of the village and his mother was a housewife. He completed his elementary school studies in Nicosia. He became one of the first students of English College opened in the Turkish sector of the city. He graduated from the English College in 1969. After completing his university studies at the Department of Physics of the Middle East Technical University, he obtained a PhD degree on Educational Psychology. Upon his return back to Cyprus, he established the first private academic establishment, preparing students for university entrance exams, in North Cyprus. He provided several hundreds of students with opportunities to carry out their university studies at the universities of Turkey. Today, there are Members of Parliament, ministers and professors amongst those students. Dr. Günsel established the Near East University in 1988. Today, the University is a gate leading to world with its pre-school, elementary school, college, 16 faculties and 4 institutes. The Near East University, sheltering a population of almost 25000 including students, academic and administrative staff.

Dr. Suat I. Günsel has been awarded with Honorary Doctorate by the Komrat University in the Republic of Moldovia in March 2009. Dr. Günsel has also been awarded with Golden Honour Medal by Gagauzia Autonomous Republic in December 2009 for his precious contributions to education sector of Gagauzia Autonomous Republic.

Dr. Günsel was enlisted amongst the world’s richest people in world-famous Forbes Magazine as the first Turkish Cypriot. Dr. Suat Günsel made substantial contributions to the development of education and health sectors through worldwide investments such as the establishment of the Grand Library of NEU, which is also known as the Central Library of Turkic World and is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week; putting the Super Computer into service, which is available only in 28 universities in the world and can process over 15 trillion operations per second; establishing the Faculty of Dentistry and dentistry clinics accredited by worldly recognized JCI and the Research Hospital of Faculty of Medicine of which establishment cost over 150 million USD; putting the ambulance aircraft of the Near East University and the Research and Training Ship of Faculty of Maritime Studies into service.

Dr. Günsel was awarded with “Outstanding Success” award by National Assembly of TRNC for his contributions and worldwide investments made for educational system and health sectors in TRNC, in March 2010.

In October 2010, Dr. Günsel was awarded with “Türksoy Gold Medal” in accordance with the decision taken at the meeting of the Permanent Council of Ministers of Culture of Member Countries of TÜRKSOY (International Organization of Turkish Culture and Arts), for his contributions to Turkish culture and education system.

Dr. Günsel was awarded with a Honorary Doctorate by Azerbaijan State Medical University for his contributions to health sector and for the establishment of Research Hospital of the Near East University, and he was also awarded with another Honorary Doctorate in Educational Sciences by Azerbaijan University for his contributions to education.

Moreover, Dr. Günsel was awarded with “Golden Honorary Plaquet” by the Centre for Islamic History, Art and Culture for his contributions to Islamic Conference Organization.

Dr. Günsel was also given the title of “Roving Ambassador” through the common decisions of the President Dr. Derviş Eroğlu and the National Assembly, on 3 November 2010.

On 5 July 2011, Dr. Günsel was awarded with “Orden of Friendship”, the highest order of the state given to foreigners, by the President of Azerbaijan, His Excellency İlham Aliyev, for his contributions to the development of relations between TRNC and Republic of Azerbaijan, and for his contributions to Azerbaijan Diaspora.

Dr. Suat I. Günsel, the Founding Rector of the Near East University, is married and the father of three children.
